Hotel Adds To Improvements At Canalside

Buffalo, N.Y. (WKBW) - The Marriott announced their plans to put a hotel in the Donovan Building in downtown Buffalo, which is already in the early stages of renovation.

"A 96 room Courtyard by Marriott is coming to the waterfront, along with a new restaurant. This is combined with the new canal system," Congressman Brian Higgins said.

Benderson development is currently in the process of renovating the building. The hotel will take up the third and fourth floors of the eight-story structure. The news follows an announcement by the Philips Lytle law firm, which will be moving its headquarters into the Donovan Building.

"What you have effectively is that building 90 percent occupied. To have a developer come in and invest its own money into development and into Canalside, it really shows we are moving and probably faster than most anticipated," Thomas Dee President of the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation said.

Dee said this is an amazing announcement and compliments the multi-million dollar improvements that are currently and have already been made to Canalside.

"Last year, we had 300 events and we had 400 thousand visitors. This year, we have 400 events and hope to have 500 thousand visitors. We are always looking for ways to improve. We have seven active construction projects. We have a Bistro at the Naval Service Museum and always the attraction is for people to come down and see the waters," Dee said.

Canalside has concerts, a beach, access to the water and water sporting equipment rental. They also hope to open an ice skating rink for the public during the winter months. Dee said the hotel is just one step closer to improving the waterfront in the Queen City.

"It adds to the tipping point to the fact we have canals being constructed on odd block, the Donovan building and now the Marriott going in there," Dee said.

The hotel is expected to open in late 2013.
