Buffalo, NY

The U.S. Department of Labor reports there are more than 21 million men and women veterans and finding work as a civilian can be difficult.

Wednesday, hundreds of out-of-work vets were hoping their luck would change after attending the Hiring Our Heroes job fair at the Connecticut Street Armory in Buffalo.

The job fair was launched in Mach 2011 by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and makes stops around the country.

In Buffalo, 350 local veterans and their spouses spent the day handing out resumes at the free one-day event.

"We have over 70 local and national employers here looking to hire our military veterans," explained Kathryn Poynton, Director of Hiring Fairs.

There are more than one million unemployed veterans nationwide and about 38,000 of them are in New York State.

The event also offers employment workshops designed to help veterans in resume writing, interview skills and provides one-on-one mentoring.
