Hamburg, N.Y. (WKBW) - Veterans Day is near and it's a time of year to honor the men and women of the military. Hilbert College student and Veteran Scott Bapst decided to take it one step further.
"This was my brainchild and I wanted to be able to reflect on the fallen soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. I myself am a veteran, Gulf War veteran. I was never actually able to say goodbye myself so we decided to put these flags out," Bapst said.
Director of Student Activities Gene McDonald said this is an important project to the student and staff at the college.
"Part of our mission statement at Hilbert College is to develop student and make them become informed students so this is how we are carrying it out. The Military Club decided to have the flags that represents each of fallen soldiers," McDonald said.
There is one message that the group wants to get out.
"There's a person behind each one of these flags that people, especially on Veterans Day should be reminded of the sacrifices men and women are making for our freedoms," Bapst said.
The group will hold numerous ceremonies throughout the day on Thursday, to give other students and the community the opportunity to see the flags. They are also unveiling their new Veterans lounge on campus.
"It's an area that vets will be able to have time for themselves. They're will be TV and computer. It will be our own special area on campus," Bapst said.
Bapst said he's proud to be part of a college that truly appreciates his service and the sacrifice of so many other military men and women.
