BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - Historians and residents in the Town of Kendall, located in Orleans County, are still trying to understand why someone would go on a destructive spree at the Beechwood Cemetery, and now the town says its had enough.

Police say vandals completely smashed out the cemetery chapel windows Friday and then on Sunday, 24 headstones and monuments were discovered badly damaged and many are beyond repair.

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time the final resting place for many Kendall residents has been vandalized, due to its secluded location. Now the town is taking action with plans to install motion-activated-lights and security cameras.

"Mischief is one thing, but devastation and maliciousness is something else that I understand people at all," said Joette Knapp.

"It's very disturbing and sickening that anyone could cause this kind of destruction to the monuments here," Dan Gaesser, Kendall Town Supervisor.

The Kendall Town Supervisor says the Town is now assessing how much the damage will cost.

Crews will also try to repair or replace as many of the headstones and monuments it can, but the supervisor says he's never seen damages so severe.
