BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - Police still on the case, trying to figure out what happened moments before a young boy was brutally killed and his grandmother shot to death.
Police killed Charlene McNally Fears after officers say she charged at them with knives. The young boy died from his injuries, his name has not been released.
The bizzare scene unfolded on 195 Esser Avenue in the city's Riverside neighborhood around 4:00 PM Wednesday. The 4-year-old boy, bleeding badly, reportedly stabbed several times. Then according to police the boys 38 year-old grandmother, lost it.
The officers pulled up to render aid and to see what was going on. The officers were charged by Fears running out of the house, and was armed with two large knives.
Residents who live nearby say they heard police order her to "drop the weapons."
Police opened fire, shooting and killing the grandmother who died instantly.
The four-year-old grandson was rushed to Women and Children's hospital, where he later died.
Homicide detectives will investigate both deaths and as with all officer-involved shootings, the case will eventually be reviewed by an Erie County Grand Jury.
People who knew Fears, say she had lived in the Riverside area for most of her life. But they also say she suffered from a history of mental illness problems.
