(Getzville, NY) The remains of Staff Sgt. William Wilson III were returned to Western New York for burial service on Friday.

The 27-year old Getzville man was killed while serving in Afghanistan in late March.

A member of the Army's 172nd Infantry Brigade, Staff Sgt. Wilson died after being shot at a checkpoint by an alleged member of the Afghan police force.

A large show of community support took place at Prior Aviation in Cheektowaga, as a private charter plane brought the soldiers body home.

Several police and fire departments helped provide an escort, while dozens of Patriot Guard Riders lined the runway with flags.

A wake for Staff Sgt. Wilson will take place on Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 4pm, and 7 to 9pm, at the Amherst Chapel of Amigone Funeral Home.

Funeral services will take place on Friday at 10am at the Chapel at Crosspoint, 500 Crosspoint Parkway in Getzville.
