AMHERST, NY (WKBW) - Funeral services for a Western New York native who made the ultimate sacrifice were held Monday morning at St. Gregory the Great Church in Williamsville.
Army Specialist Blake Whipple was killed while serving in Afghanistan when a roadside bomb exploded on November 5.
Whipple, a native of Williamsville, will be laid to rest in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Hundreds of junior high students from St. Gregory School lined the sidewalk surrounding the church, each holding a small American flag.
"And we decided all of our children in our junior high would honor him by standing out along the procession carrying the flag and saluting or having their hands over their heart as a way to honor Blake and his family," said Principal Patricia Fruend.
Blake's father, David Whipple, gave the tearful eulogy.
"Our Blake loved the limelight. Love being the center of attention," he said. "But when it came to being a friend, it wasn't about Blake. It was about everyone else."
