Medina, NY (WKBW) Firefighter Shane Ackerson died in a motor vehicle accident Wednesday night on Rochester Road. Now, the Medina Fire Department mourns the death of one of their own. A funeral was held Monday morning in Medina, where family and friends gathered to say goodbye.
35 year old Shane Ackerson was remembered as a man with a big heart and a great sense of humor. In recent months Ackerson lost over thirty pounds as a result of heavy exercise in an attempt to combat high blood pressure and heart disease. Friends say he was so dedicated to loosing weight because he wanted to live a long and healthy life for his wife and two young daughters.
The Medina Fire Department plans to install a mural in the fire hall's fitness room, dedicated to Ackerson, "it's going to say; motivation, determination and perseverance...so he can always be with us.", said Jerry Lewis Jr., of the Medina Fire Department.
Ackerson leaves behind a wife, Bethany, and two small children, Marrisa and Catherine.
