Buffalo, NY (WKBW) - Experts say the number of deaths from prescription drug abuse is now higher than crack, cocaine and heroine combined.

Thursday evening, a community forum will tackle the growing problem in Western New York.

U.S. Attorney William Hochul, federal agents and a special panel plan to hone in on the battle against prescription drug abuse.

This comes just one day after Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) pitched major initiatives to fight the addiction problem.

According to Schumer, there were more than 23-hundred cases of prescription drug abuse reported in 2011 in Western New York.

He adds that more than 70-percent of kids getting hooked to pain pills, find the medicine in their own home.

The forum takes place from 5-7:30 pm at the Connecticut Street Armory in Buffalo, located at 184 Connecticut Street.

Health professionals will be on hand as well. Each of the panelists will discuss the social and/or medical available, lack of monitoring of prescription drugs, health literacy and other issues.

The forum will also include a 40 minutes question and answer period.
