Tonawanda, NY (WKBW) - Erie County's top cop took part in a forum Monday night on the New York SAFE Act, which he says is unconstitutional.

Sheriff Tim Howard was one of three speakers who addressed a crowd of more than 100 gun rights supporters at Shannon Pub in Tonawanda.

Howard has been a vocal opponent of the law.

"The State passed an unconstitutional law," the Sheriff said at the forum. "The dilemna here is that if this is unconstitutional, how can you do something that is unconstitutional?"

Russ Thompson, a Tea Party activist who organized the forum stated that he thinks more educational forums on the NY SAFE Act are necessary.

52 counties in Upstate New York have now come out against the NY SAFE Act.

Sheriff Howard is one of a few Sheriff's to file a lawsuit, challenging the legality of the law.
