FORT HOOD, TX (KXXV-TV) - A Fort Hood soldier is dead after an apparent drowning over the weekend in Stillhouse Hollow lake south of Killeen, Texas.
25 year old Pfc Christopher Kent Heinz out of Fort Hood was out swimming with a group of fellow soldiers Sunday afternoon. The soldier and his friends tried to swim across a cove at the park when he went under water 50 feet from the shore. When his friends couldn't find him, they called 911.
The Corp of Engineers, Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Morgan's Point dive team attempted a search and rescue for the soldier. Divers recovered his body at 2:14 p.m. in about 12 feet of water.
The man was pronounced dead by Bell County Justice of the Peace Don Engleking who ordered the body taken to Dallas for an autopsy.
Sheriff's Office investigators, Texas Game Wardens and Fort Hood authorities continue their investigation.
