BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - Fire crews responded to what was originally believed to be a HAZMAT situation at the Pearl Street Grill and Brewery downtown just after 10:00 a.m. Monday morning.

Crews initially thought there was a chemical leak in the basement that was a result of a small fire that broke out in the restaurant basement.

Those chemicals are actually used to clean the brewery's beer brewing containers, but were not involved and no leak was discovered.

Six Buffalo firefighters were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The small blaze was contained quickly and damage to the building is minimal.

Even though there was no actual HAZMAT situation, fire officials say it was a great opportunity to train.

"We have to take precautions and treat it like a HAZMAT, but once we start, we use it as a training session because it serves us as a training session to put out our normal response," said Buffalo Fire Chief Don McFeely.

Fire Marshals and investigators are still on the scene working to determine the cause of the blaze.
