Buffalo, N.Y. (WKBW) - A mother and her four-year-old were trapped in a first floor rear bedroom fire.
Firefighters arrived on scene with word there were people in the house.
Emergency crews began their search of the home just before 12:30 a.m. They were greeted with extensive heat and smoke. Officials said they had to enter from the rear of the home and icy conditions and low water pressure in the area slowed crews down.
When they finally reached the victims, they were alive but severely burned and rushed to the hospital.
The mother was pronounced dead around 1:30 p.m.
The original structure that caught fire collapsed but the flames also touched two neighboring houses.
Other family members, a father and son, escaped the fire without major injuries but were taken to the hospital to get checked out. No one else was hurt.
Fire crews are still investigating to find a cause and the total damage is about $150,000.
