Fire Destroys Apartments In Cuba, NY

CUBA — Fire destroyed the top floor and attic of the Cubana apartment complex, 18 Hill St., early Friday morning. There were no injuries.

The fire started at 1:18am at the Cubana Apartment Complex on the 3rd floor and did not spread to any other floors. The fire destroyed the 3rd floor, and the 1st and 2nd floor have extreme smoke and water damage. The damage estimate is $650,000. Eleven families (about 30 people) were displaced as a result of the fire.

( courtesy Olean Times Herald ) The Cuba Fire Department responded at around 1 a.m. today to combat a fire in one of the third-floor apartments of the 11-unit building.

“We were unable to stop it spreading into the attic,” said Jason Butts, second assistant chief.

Fire destroyed the third floor and the attic, Mr. Butts said, with smoke and water damage done to the first and second floors.

The department was still on the scene at 8:30 a.m. “We’re just getting ready for the investigators,” Mr. Butts said.

Early Friday Morning, April 29, The American Red Cross Disaster Action Team from the Allegany County District of the Southwestern NY Chapter was dispatched to provide disaster relief assistance to meet the emergency needs of victims devastated by a multi-family apartment fire. DAT Volunteers Bob Shook of Cuba, Tom Wilson of Wellsville, and Jim Kruser of Andover responded to provide initial disaster relief assistance. Temporary housing, clothing and meals were items that may have been provided to meet the emergency needs of the victims. The American Red Cross will continue to assist the victims of this tragedy with additional services and referrals, as needed.
