Niagara Falls, N.Y. (WKBW) – It is a strange case that has police stumped. Junior Welterweight Boxer Nick Casal was attacked. Now, police are trying to figure out who committed the crime.

Casal’s father Ray, who owns Casal’s School of Fighting Arts in Niagara Falls, said the family is devastated.

“It's pretty shocking that someone could be that vicious, someone that you don't even know. He doesn't know this guy,” Ray Casal said.

The alleged attack took place on Portland Street in the Town of Niagara early Saturday morning. Family members said Casal was attacked from behind, possibly with a metal object.

“It must have been a light weight metal something that hit him. It split him open. The blows were severe,” Ray Casal said.

Police have been interviewing witnesses, including a possible person of interest. When authorities arrived on scene, Casal was gone. He allegedly went home and was then rushed to ECMC.

Detectives have not yet spoken to the boxer, but are eager to do so to find out more information. They plan to talk with Casal Tuesday, depending on his strength.

In the meantime, Casal is still recovering in the hospital and his family is thankful he is alive.

“I have never seen anybody survive something like that. Those wounds were pretty deep. They took the tests at the hospital, there was no brain damage, and there were no fractures. It’s amazing. We still don't know what he was hit with. We just know the man was a big man and he is on the run. They are still looking for him,” Ray Casal said.

Earlier reports indicated Casal was attacked by a group of people. Now, police said they believe it was just one person. They are not releasing the name or further information about the person of interest.
