BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - 12 people have been arrested and one person is still at large following early morning raids throughout the city of Buffalo.
Ten of the suspects were named in a federal criminal complaint and were arraigned in U.S. District Court in downtown Buffalo late Monday afternoon.
The ringleader of the group, according to prosecutors, is DeWayne Gray, Jr., 27, of West Avenue. His home was raided this morning. Authorities said they found drugs there.
"This is a continuing effort to rid our city of the worst of the worst violent criminals, gang members," said Buffalo Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda. "Our efforts will not only continue, they will intensify. We're going to work hard to make Buffalo a safer place."
U.S. Attorney for the Western District of New York, William Hochul, said those arrested are members of the LRGP Gang, which operates in the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood near the Broadway Market.
The gang is named after streets in the area; Lombard, Rother, Gibson and Plater, Hochul said.
"If you're in a gang or you're part of an organized criminal activity chances are you're being targeted and you're already known to law enforcement," said Hochul.
"Many gangs are becoming more organized, more sophisticated and continue to use violence to control neighborhoods and advance illicit money-making schemes," said Christopher Piehota, Special Agent in Charge of the Buffalo office of the FBI.
The other suspects arrested and charged on Monday are John P. Evans, 28; Shirley A. Covington, 27; Philip T. Brown, 19; John K. Hayward, 28; Joseph A. Martin, 24; Dijaon M. Bland, 22; Demario Devon Nance, 29; and Alexis L. Mills, 29, all of Buffalo.
Justin P. Cotton, 21, also of Buffalo, is still at large.
Also arrested are Dayshawn Brazier, 20; Erika Gray, 30; and Kiara MacNamee, 20, all of Buffalo.
