Fear of Fires This 4th of July Holiday

Buffalo, N.Y. (WKBW) – Dry weather plus the Fourth of July holiday is a dangerous combination because of fireworks. Although they are illegal in New York state, authorities said it does not stop people from shooting them off and it could cause problems.

Authorities said fireworks are always hazardous to untrained adults and of course, children. They said this year it could be even worse because of the dry conditions. Emergency crews fear it could cause major fires to nearby grassy and wooded areas. Their advice is to leave the festivities up to professionals who are experts at blowing off the fireworks and knowing how to keep the surrounding areas safe.

“Very dry conditions both in the rural and suburban parts of the county, it adds greatly to the risk of fire from the inappropriate use of fireworks,” Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard said.

With this dry weather, even professionals said they are taking extra precautions. They are working with local fire departments to make sure everyone is safe this holiday.

Again, they are encouraging amateurs to stay away from fireworks. They not only cause fires but they could also cause severe injuries if not used properly.
