( RELEASE) The New York State Police report a fatal two car accident which occurred on State Route 16 in the Town of Sardinia Wednesday evening at 8:54 p.m..
JEROME P. KAWALERSKI, age 81, of Buffalo, New York, was northbound on State Route 16 when his vehicle veered into the southbound lane and struck a southbound vehicle head-on. The second vehicle was operated by KARL BURESCH, age 52, of Chaffee, N.Y.. Both KAWALERSKI and BURESCH were initially trapped in their vehicles and needed to be extricated by fire personnel from the Holland and Chaffee Volunteer Fire Companies.
Mr. KAWALERSKI suffered massive internal injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at South Buffalo Mercy Hospital.
Mr. BURESCH also suffered extensive internal injuries and is currently being treated at the Erie County Medical Center. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
A witness reported to Troopers that she observed the KAWALERSKI vehicle cross into the on-coming lane for no apparent reason. The roadway was snow covered, but it is not known at this point if weather was a factor.
State Police will be awaiting autopsy results to determine if Mr. KAWALERSKI possibly suffered a medical condition prior to the accident.
The exact cause remains under investigation.
