Buffalo, NY (WKBW) After 140 years of operation Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital will shut its doors and merge with Buffalo General Hospital.

Employees and volunteers shared fond memories of their time at Millard Gates during a good-bye party Wednesday afternoon in the hospital's main lobby.

The emergency department will officially close at 6 a.m., March 28th, 2012. During that week all the services and staff will move to the new Gates Vascular Institute adjacent to the Buffalo General Medical Center.

Hospital administrators say the new institute will become the premiere destination for stroke care, cardiac surgery, and vascular services but some employees are sad to leave their old home.

Millard Gates has about 2500 employees. Most of them were offered similar positions at the new facility. The majority of workers will move to the new location but some employees were offered early retirement packages or positions elsewhere within the Kaleida Health System.

A spokesperson tells Eyewitness News they are still working on making some of those employment offers.
