Orchard Park, NY (WKBW)
The Family Justice Center of Erie County (FJC) will mark the grand opening of its first satellite office. The event will consist of a brief program featuring some of the Southtowns Family Center’s founders, followed by a tribute to Orchard Park resident, the late Aasiya Zubair Hassan, and a ribbon cutting. The Southtowns Family Center was made possible by a group of religious leaders in Orchard Park who came together in early 2010 with the idea of turning a home on the campus of the Orchard Park Presbyterian Church into a satellite FJC office.
The religious and community leaders responsible for the creation of the Southtowns Family Center were shocked by Zubair Hassan’s murder and wanted to do something to help prevent this type of tragedy from happening again. They also noted that more of their congregation members were presenting as domestic violence victims after Zubair Hassan’s death. With the new FJC location, domestic violence victim’s services will be more easily accessible for victims who live in the southern suburbs of Buffalo. The Southtowns Family Center will offer safety planning, spiritual care, advocacy and referrals for counseling, legal assistance, emergency shelter, advocacy and more.
The ceremony takes place at the Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, 4383 South Buffalo Street in Orchard Park at 1pm.
