Amherst, N.Y. (WKBW) - Sheila Pelton, 81, and Jocelyn Elberson, 25, didn't know each other but their paths crossed when an alleged drunk motorcyclist killed them, Sunday afternoon.

Police said the driver David Smith, 53, was drunk at the time of the crash. He is being charged with DWI and Criminally Negligent Homicide.

Sheila's husband Foster was also injured in the crash and is still recovering at the hospital. Their son Nigel Pelton spoke out about the moment the family told his father that Sheila did not survive.

"The hardest thing is that he's beginning to realize that his wife of more than 50 years is not going to be there when he gets home. Physically, he's doing okay but mentally he's beginning to feel pretty down about everything," Pelton said.

The tragedy is also hitting Jocelyn's family hard.

"One glance, even one smile from her, something inside of you, it was like a light inside of you turned on," brother Brett Elberson said.

Both Jocelyn and Sheila faced health battles in the past. Sheila was a breast cancer survivor and Jocelyn recovered from heart surgery. Sadly, this tragedy brought their lives to an abrupt end.

"She had so much more life to live. So many more lives to touch and smiles to give. She shouldn't have been taken away so soon," Jocelyn's sister Heather Brothers said.

Smith was arraigned in his hospital bed and will be immediately sent to jail following his release from the hospital.
