Facebook Launches Suicide Prevention Effort

December 14, 2011 Updated Dec 14, 2011 at 12:23 PM EDT

Facebook on Tuesday launched a new suicide prevention effort for users of the social networking website.

According to a post on the Facebook Safety webpage, the program -- which is a partnership between Facebook and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline -- allows users to report suicidal comments posted by friends.

The person who posted the suicidal comment will then immediately receive an e-mail from Facebook that encourages them to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline or click on a link to chat with a crisis worker, according to the post.
