FBI: Tip, Police Work Led to Alleged North Carolina Killer's Arrest

(Niagara Falls, NY ) WKBW -- An agent for the US Marshal's office tell me that they believe Michael Harvey arrived in Niagara Falls around noon on Sunday. The agent tells us the Niagara County Sheriff's department got a tip that led to Harvey's arrest. Authorities saying little about that tip. But we do know that around ten thirty this morning, Michael Harvey was arrested just a few blocks from his childhood home in Niagara Falls. An agent for the US Marshal's office tells us that Harvey was found at a friend's house. That agent telling us that Harvey was asleep on a couch and surrounded by heroin paraphernalia.
The white Chevy Blazer that police believed Harvey stole from North Carolina was burnt out and found behind the Summit Mall. He was taken into custody without incident.
Saturday, Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department recovered the body of 23 year old Valerie Hamilton. Ms. Hamilton's body was found at the Mini-Storage Center at 4500 Monroe Road. Police in Charlotte say Ms. Hamilton was last seen Wednesday at the Thomas Street Tavern with Harvey.Her father is a police chief in the Charlotte area. Merl Hamilton made a passionate plea for help in locating his daughters killer.
Harvey is a registered Level III sex offender because of a crime he committed in Western New York. Police in Charlotte say he has been arrested at least six times.
Michael Harvey is in Niagara County jail tonight. He will be arraigned tomorrow morning. If he confirms his identity and waives his right to a hearing he will be extradited to North Carolina in about 5-10 days.
