Hamburg, NY (WKBW) - For several days, residents in the Toledo, Ohio area could not drink any tap water. Lake Erie in that area had been contaminated by blue-green algae.
Blue-green algae can cause serious health problems, including damage to the liver. Even boiling water cannot get rid of the toxins.
The Erie County Water Authority and Erie County Health Commissioner both say the two entities are testing Lake Erie for the algae. So far, it does not appear that the blue-green algae exists in our region of that body of water.
Experts say the eastern and western shores of Lake Erie are very different. The western shore is more shallow and has slower currents than the areas near Western New York, making it easier for algae to settle and building up.
