Erie County Fair Takes New Steps Towards Guest Safety

Hamburg, NY The Erie County Fair has been a long standing tradition of family entertainment and summertime fun. Over the last several years the Fair has drawn over a million people in just twelve days. We pride ourselves on the ability to welcome over a million people each year through our gates and effectively keep each visitor safe while on the grounds.

The Erie County Fair has taken great steps to continue to move forward in finding new and improved ways to ensure a safe environment and prevent an emergency of any kind on the grounds. Venues such as stadiums, arenas and theme parks have implemented new security measures. The goal is to have a place where guests have the freedom to enjoy themselves knowing their family is in a safe environment.

The Erie County Fair has a close working relationship with Hamburg Police, New York State Police, and the Erie County Sheriff’s Department. Each year over one hundred internally hired security personnel are employed on the grounds as well. Fair security has been working year round with local law enforcement agencies and Fair management to take part in Incident Command System training to ensure the highest level of preparedness for the upcoming Fair.

This year in an effort to continue to step up security there will be bag and person checks at each of the gates as well as in the Grandstand. Patrons entering the Fair at any gate will have their bags searched for any items that are deemed unsafe by security personnel. The Fair is not limiting the amount or size of bags brought in but Fair-goers are asked to pack lightly to keep the bag check operating efficiently. Coolers are still permitted onto the grounds as well as strollers, backpacks, camera bags, purses and diaper bags, however, all of these items will be checked.

The same check will be administered at the entrance of the Grandstand before concerts and motor-events.

At all check locations there will be lines for guests who are attending the event without a bag to expedite entry.

Fair officials emphasize the importance of the security checks as not an impediment to the freedoms of our fair-goers but instead an enhancement. Guests will now be able to enjoy the family friendly atmosphere of the Fair.

This proactive security approach is in line with plans implemented by other venues. The Town of Hamburg is now utilizing the CodeRed system. Fair-goers are being encouraged to download the free CodeRed app on their smartphone to keep them updated with emergency situations that may arise not only on the Fairgrounds but anywhere they travel that is operating under the CodeRed program.
