Erie County Clerk Warns Homeowners of 'Deed Scam'

February 13, 2012 Updated Feb 13, 2012 at 7:13 PM EDT

Buffalo, N.Y. (WKBW release) -- Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs on Monday cautioned all Erie County property owners to watch for misleading solicitations offering to sell you a "Certified Copy of Your Deed".

These companies are dramatically overcharging for this service by upwards of $50, according to Jacobs.

“If you receive one of these letters, or an e-mail, website prompt, or other advertisement, you should ignore them. A certified copy of your deed is available from our office for the cost of copying,” Jacobs said in a news release. “The majority of homeowners have their original recorded deed in their possession. Deeds for every parcel of land in Erie County are public record and stored here in our offices. I encourage Erie County residents to check first with our office for any deed related questions.”
