Erie County Beaches Officially Open for Summer 2011 Season

Evans, NY (WKBW-Release)

Erie County Executive Chris Collins, County Legislator Lynne Dixon and Parks Commissioner Jim Hornung announced today that the County beaches are now open to the public and fully staffed with lifeguards seven days a week. Weather permitting, Wendt and Bennett beaches will be open, free of charge, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m throughout the summer.

“The exceptional condition of our two picturesque beaches is another sign that our parks system is stronger than ever,” said Erie County Executive Chris Collins. “It’s hard to believe that a few years ago, Erie County couldn’t afford to keep our beaches maintained and open to the public. We have come a long way over the last three years and my administration will continue to prioritize county spending to ensure that these gems remain open and available to our residents. “

As part of a continued effort to keep guests safe, the picnic and playground areas at Wendt and Bennett will be surrounded by a dirt and grass berm. This will prevent vehicles from entering the area and keep children and families safe while enjoying their park experience.

“We know that county beaches are very important to our residents who want to spend as much time outdoors with their families as possible during these few summer months,” said Legislator Dixon. “Again this year, the Legislature has approved funding for full-time lifeguards to keep swimmers safe seven days a week.”

As always, visitors are reminded that, with their commitment to a clean and healthy environment, county beaches will continue to be a summer destination for our residents. Visitors are asked to remember the carry-in, carry-out policy on the beach, as well as to adhere to state laws regarding consumption of alcoholic beverages.

“I’d like to thank County Executive Collins and Legislator Dixon for ensuring my department has the funding it needs to provide this quality service to area residents,” Commissioner Hornung said. “We appreciate that beach goers will continue to help us maintain the beaches so we can all enjoy our beautiful shores throughout the summer and for years to come.”

The County Parks and Health departments are working together to ensure that beaches are safe by inspecting the water quality at both at least twice a week, and more frequently during and after heavy rains.

Wendt Beach is located at 7676 Old Lake Shore Road, Derby, NY 14047, and Bennett Beach at 8276 Old Lake Shore Road, Angola, NY 14006, both in the Town of Evans.
