BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - One in five Erie County residents receive coverage under the public health program for the poor known as Medicaid, according to an audit released by County Executive Mark Poloncarz on Thursday.

Erie County spends roughly $1.4 billion on the program each year, with the state and federal governments picking up most of the bill.

This year's county portion is estimated at $219 million.

The audit also finds that a growing number of poor living in the suburbs are covered by the health care program.
