ERIE COUNTY, N.Y. (WKBW) The race for the 27th Congressional seat was as close as the polls predicted.
It wasn't until the early morning hours that Republican challenger Chris Collins felt comfortable to declare victory.
While there were still many absentee and military ballots to be counted, Democrat Congresswoman Kathy Hochul conceded the race because she believed there were not enough to change the outcome.
The Collins campaign says strong support from Erie and Wyoming County was key to the win.
Congresswoman Hochul did better in the outlying areas, but the loss will bring to a close a career in public office that started in 1994.
