BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - The Empire State Games have been canceled moving forward as State Park officials say they cannot afford to go on, the Poughkeepsie Journal reports.
The upcoming winter games were scheduled to be in Lake Placid, with the summer games set to take place in Rochester.
Last year, with the help of a last minute funding boost from First Niagara, the games were held in Buffalo and widely considered a success.
Winter Games administrator Lisa Del Signore wrote in a letter to Empire State Games athletes obtained by the Poughkeepsie Journal, "“We have been informed that there will be no appropriation for any of the Empire State Games programs in the coming year, and two of our five staff members have been laid off effective the end of the year. The other three have been re-assigned within the State Parks agency. With no money and no staff, we have no program."
