COLLINS, NY (WKBW) - A 76-year-old woman was rescued Wednesday afternoon after she fell several feet into a well in her backyard.

First responders were called to the woman's home, on State Route 39 in the Town of Collins, after a neighbor heard the woman screaming for help and came to her aid.

"The well was covered," said neighbor Ray Colpoys. "And the cover went down with her. It was rotted. When she stepped on it - she went right down with it."

The woman got caught on a pipe inside the well which prevented her from falling all the way down the 20-foot deep hole, which was filled with water.

"She was halfway submerged," said Collins Vol. Fire Co. Chief David North.

"We extricated her with rope immediately, we had Mercy Flight in the air just in case we needed more support," he added.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries, North said.

The woman's name was not immediately available.
