February 20, 2012 Updated Feb 20, 2012 at 10:46 PM EDT

ESPN said Sunday that it has fired an editor responsible for an offensive headline about New York Knicks basketball player Jeremy Lin that appeared on the network's mobile platforms early Saturday morning.

The phrase used a slang term offensive to Asian and Chinese people. It appeared in the headline following the Knicks' loss to the New Orleans Hornets on Friday night. Lin is Asian-American.

In comments made to the New York Daily News, the editor who was fired said, "This has nothing to do with me being cute or funny."
