BUFFALO, NY (WKBW-TV) This winter's insane. As if the polar vortex stomping on the local grape crop wasn't bad enough, now the possibility of Polonia's pussy willows being put in peril presents itself. How much more can we take?

A major component of the annual post-Lenten observance known as Dyngus Day has boys and girls chasing each other with pussy willow branches and splashing each other with water. However, this year's unrelenting winter has some people concerned that the plants have been damaged from the never-ending frost, and this could put Buffalo's Polonia in a panic.

So, we shall see if Mother Nature cooperates with us or not. But what if, God forbid, we had to find an alternative to do our swatting? Then what?

Well, there's really nothing quite like a pussy willow, but you could use a substitute expression of spring. Forsythia and other branches are options, but nothing is quite like a pussy willow. There are lots of varieties, but only one that people really want: the traditional pussy willow.

Well, Polish pride and Buffalo civic spirit are much stronger than any polar vortex, so whether there is or isn't a shortage of pussy willows this year, Dyngus Day will definitely arrive in full strength because Dyngus Day is not just a day. It's a state of mind.
