NORTH TONAWANDA (WKBW) Neighbors say 42-year old Darnelle Brady had just moved to North Tonawanda from Atlanta.
Wednesday night, she was walking her two dogs with her boyfriend along a path that runs by the Erie Canal.
What was supposed to be a casual stroll on a warm night turned to tragedy as an accused drunk driver crashed into the couple.
Police have charged 47-year old Anthony Regalla with DWI, vehicular assault, and several traffic violations.
Investigators say around 11:15pm, Regalla had fled the scene at 216 Oliver Street where he damaged parked vehicles while driving his 2007 Ford Focus.
As the City of Tonawanda man drove further south on Oliver Street, he lost control near the intersection of Sweeney Street.
Regalla's car crossed Sweeney Street and drove onto a bike path hitting Darnelle Brady, Renaldo Parker, and Brady's two dogs.
Anthony Regalla then drove his car into the Erie Canal.
Regalla and a female passenger were able to escape with minor injuries.
One of the victims, Darnelle Brady, suffered a severe leg injury.
Brady was taken to the Erie County Medical Center where she underwent a surgical procedure and is listed in stable condition.
The other victim, Renaldo Parker, was treated and released from the Erie County Medical Center.
One of Brady's dogs was taken by a neighbor to a local animal hospital where it is being treated. The other dog was killed by the impact.
Police took the suspect, Anthony Regalla, to DeGraff Memorial Hospital where he refused to submit to a blood alcohol test.
The Niagara County District Attorney then arranged for a court-ordered blood draw.
Regalla was arraigned and released on $2500 bail.
According to court records, Anthony Regalla had a previous DWI conviction in North Tonawanda from January 2003.
Anthony Regalla is scheduled to return to court on June 28th.
