Drowning Claims Life Of Lockport Teen

LOCKPORT, NY ( release) The City of Lockport Police Department is investigating an accidental drowning that occurred at approximately 9:51 pm Wednesday night in the Erie Canal near the Exchange Street Bridge.

It was reported that an 18 year old male was fishing in the canal with two of his friends when some of his fishing tackle fell into the water.

The male then went into the water to retrieve his fishing tackle.

Witnesses reported that the male began struggling immediately and then went under water and never resurfaced. Officer’s from the City of Lockport Police Department and the City of Lockport Fire Department responded to the scene and began a search. The Lockport Police Departments boat and ATV’s were also dispatched to assist with the search in and along the canal.

A short time later, the body of David Lee Draper was recovered from the water by the Niagara County Sheriffs dive team a short distance away from where the male reportedly fell in. Also assisting at the scene was the New York State Police.

David Lee Draper is from Works Place, of Lockport , NY.

David attended Lockport High School, graduating in June 2011.

David leaves behind his mother and father, Glen and Theresa Draper, sisters Joyce Marie Draper, Tiffany Ann Balcom and Rosemary Marie Draper.

David was employed at the Lockport Presbyterian Home.
