Buffalo, NY (WKBW) - One Western New Yorker who is an Oklahoma native is in her home state, and spotted the deadly tornado.

Melissa Marranca of Depew is in Oklahoma City. She went down to see her niece graduate from high school over the weekend.

Marranca was supposed to fly back to Buffalo on Monday. However, the tornado created hail and lightning that grounded her plane.

Her plane was about to take-off, when she saw the tornado from the runway.

"I just didn't even know what to think," Marranca said. "I just kept looking out the window and looking at the hail. The whole plane was pretty quiet, because you could hear -- the hail was so loud, you couldn't even hold a conversation."

"When he turned the aircraft, the whole right side of the plane could see the funnel. We could see the tornado in the air. And he said there's a small tornado on the south side of the airport, and we're going to be heading back to the gate. So, I looked at the lady across from me, and I said, this isn't a small tornado."

Melissa's mother is without power, but all of her family is safe.

She hopes to fly back to Buffalo tomorrow.
