Town of Tonawanda, NY (WKBW) - Firefighters were called to an apartment complex on Rosemont Avenue in the Town of Tonawanda around 9:30a.m. Wednesday morning after flames engulfed a second floor apartment.

Crews attempted to make entry upon arrival, but were held back due to intense heat and smoke. Once crews from Sheridan Park and Brighton Fire Departments tackled the blaze, they discovered the body of a man inside the upstairs apartment where the fire originated. The other tenants were evacuated. The fire was contained to the one apartment. Investigators are unsure if the man died due to the fire, or if he was deceased before the fire started. One firefighter sustained minor injuries while tackling the blaze.

The Town of Tonawanda Police and Fire Investigation Unit are investigating the origin and cause of the fire. Damage is estimated at $15,000.

The victim has been identified as 52 year old Randall Gala.
