Buffalo, NY

A house on the 200 block of Wyoming Avenue near East Delavan Avenue in Buffalo was home to a husband and wife, their five children and several pets until a fast moving fire erupted in the kitchen around 4:30 p.m. Friday evening.

"We had heavy fire showing out of the windows on the rear of the building out of the kitchen windows with the building fully charged with thick black smoke on arrival," said Battalion Chief Mike Swanekamp of the Buffalo Fire Department.

The mother of the house says she had just picked up her children from school and the family was out to dinner when they got a call that their home was on fire. When they rushed back to the house her husband tried frantically to get inside and ended up being restrained by police but was not arrested.

The family's two dogs were returned to them but their pet birds were killed in the blaze which also sent one firefighter to the hospital.

"At least one fireman got banged up. He's being taken to ECMC to get checked out for a shoulder injury." said Swanekamp.

The family tells us they will be staying with friends until they find a permanent home.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
