Albany, N.Y. (WKBW release) -- Governor Andrew M. Cuomo on Tuesday announced that the State Senate unanimously confirmed former Broome County Executive Barbara Fiala as Commissioner of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.

"After 40 years of public service, Commissioner Fiala has the experience and knowledge to lead the DMV by finding efficiencies and making this agency work for the people of the State of New York," Cuomo said. "Commissioner Fiala's dedication to this state only goes to show that she will put the needs of New Yorkers above all else. I thank Majority Leader Skelos and Senators DeFrancisco and Fuschillo for their careful consideration."

"It is an honor to be confirmed as the Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles," said Fiala. "I feel privileged to continue my service to New Yorkers in this new role and look forward to working with both the legislature and the Governor in reforming our transportation system to keep New York moving in the right direction. I thank Governor Cuomo, Majority Leader Dean Skelos, Senators DeFrancisco and Fuschillo for their comprehensive review during this process."

Most recently, Fiala was the first female County Executive of Broome County. In addition, Fiala was a board member of the New York State Association of Counties, President of the New York State Association of County Executives and also served on the County Executives of America Board. She was Vice Chair of the Broome County Industrial Development Agency Board and was appointed in 2008 as a Committee Member of the National Association of Counties; Community and Economic Development Steering Committee. She is a life-long resident of Broome County and the City of Binghamton.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo Jr., Chair of the Senate Committee on Transportation said, "Barbara Fiala's executive experience, combined with her many years of experience managing local DMV operations, make her an excellent choice as the State's next DMV Commissioner. I commend Governor Cuomo on selecting such a well-qualified nominee, and I look forward to working with Commissioner Fiala in her new position."

Senator Martin Malavé Dilan, Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Transportation said, "Barbara Fiala is another exemplary candidate put forth by Governor Cuomo. Her years of public service to the people of Broome County are a welcomed addition to the Department of Motor Vehicles. I look forward to working with her to ensure the services the DMV provides remain at the highest level."

Senate Deputy Majority Leader Tom Libous said, "Governor Cuomo made an outstanding choice. Barbara Fiala was a great County Executive and an outstanding County Clerk, and no one understands the issues of the Department of Motor Vehicles better than she does. She'll make a great statewide representative and Commissioner. I'm very happy for her."

Stephen J. Acquario, Executive Director of the New York State Association of Counties, said, "We commend Governor Andrew M. Cuomo for his appointment of the Honorable Barbara J. Fiala as commissioner of the NYS Department of Motor Vehicle. County Executive Fiala is a dedicated public servant who has worked hard on behalf of the people of Broome County. As an innovative county executive she was the CEO of a large county government, and as an experienced county clerk she managed a busy local department of motor vehicles. These experiences make her particularly well suited to lead this important state agency."
