ORLEANS COUNTY, NY ( release) An Albion teenager is dead, and two others are injured, following a one-car crash in the Town of Ridgeway.
The incident occurred shortly after 1:00a.m. in the 3600 block of Culvert Road.
A 2004 Saturn 4-door sedan was traveling north on Culvert Road where it tunnels under the Erie Canal. It appears that the operator lost control of the vehicle in the tunnel.
Upon exiting the tunnel on the north side of the canal, the vehicle ran off the west side of the roadway. It traveled some distance before slamming left side into a tree.
The force of impact spun the vehicle and ejected the rear seat passenger.
The driver of the car is identified as Joseph C. Pearl, age 18, of Albion. He was transported by ground ambulance to Medina Memorial Hospital and later flown to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester by Mercy Flight helicopter.
The front seat passenger is identified as Randall P. Vanhouton, age 18, of Albion. He was also transported by ground ambulance to Medina Memorial.
The rear seat passenger is identified as Terry James Moyer, Jr., age 17. He was also transported by ground ambulance to Medina Memorial, where he was pronounced dead at 2:45a.m.
While the incident remains under investigation by the Orleans County Sheriff's Office, it appears that alcohol and excessive speed were contributing factors.
Charges against Pearl are pending his recovery and the results of that investigation.
The incident was investigated by Deputy D.E. Foeller Jr. He was assisted by Sergeant D.E. Draper Jr., Lieutenant R.E. Perry, Investigator C.L. Black, and Chief Deputy T.L. Drennan.
