Around 2:15 pm Wednesday afternoon a two-car crash shut down Losson Road for about six hours while police investigated the accident and cleaned up the scene.
Deadly crashes are unusual on roads with a 35 mile per hour speed limit but that is exactly what happened on Losson and Hillpine Roads in Cheektowaga.
"For some unknown reason that vehicle going westbound went over into the oncoming lane of traffic," said Captain Jim Speyer of the Cheektowaga Police Department.
Forty-one year old Jill Foltarz of Cheektowaga was behind the wheel of a maroon colored Saturn. Her 17 year old son Brian Mauerman was a passenger. Police say Foltarz's car swerved and slammed into a black Toyota SUV.
"It's something other than weather. Like I said that's our guess at this point. We don't like to guess...it's a possibility is it was either a medical condition or some form of distracted driving...cell phone, texting we don't know for sure," said Speyer.
Foltarz was pronounced dead on the scene and her teenage son was rushed to ECMC with serious injuries. Hospital workers say the teenage boy was awake, alert and talking, but underwent surgery for his injuries.
The driver of the SUV was also taken to ECMC but is not seriously hurt.
Losson Road was re-opened about 8:30 pm.
