BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - Construction on the historic replica canals on Buffalo's waterfront will resume following a dispute with the old contractor that shut down work there for the summer.

The canals will begin at Marine Drive and cut through a portion of the old Memorial Auditorium site. The second phase will take the canals from Main Street to Washington Street.

The Erie County Harbor Development Corporation announced it has hired a new contractor to complete the work but declined to name the company.

Dipizio Construction, a Cheektowaga family company, was awarded a $23 million contract to do the work but approximately 12 months after the ground breaking ceremony in May of 2012 the ECHDC reported having problems with Dipizio and said the project would be delayed but did not comment on what went wrong.

The project is expected to be completed by next summer and that the new contractors will no increase the cost of the project.
