July 28, 2011 Updated Jul 28, 2011 at 8:52 AM EDT

Erie, PA (WKBW-Release)

U.S. Coast Guard boat and helicopter crews are searching the waters of Lake Erie near the entrance to Presque Isle Bay near Erie, Pa., for a 27-year-old man who was last seen struggling to stay above the water after jumping off a sailboat there.

The missing man's name is not being released at this time. His hometown is unknown.

Someone else aboard the sailboat reportedly threw the man a life jacket after realizing he was struggling but said the man was not able to grab a hold of it. It is also reported he was seen going under the water and not resurfacing.

Coast Guard personnel were notified of the incident just before 6:30 p.m. and immediately launched boat and aircrews in a 25-foot Response Boat-Small and a 47-foot Motor Life Boat both from Station Erie, and an MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter from Air Station Detroit.

One of the boat crews from Station Erie was on scene within two minutes and began searching.

Also assisting with the search are a local police department, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and three local dive teams.

Lake water is currently calm and 78 degrees.
