NORTH TONAWANDA, NY (WKBW) - Federal agents raided the Clarence home of Dr. Matthew Bennett on Friday morning and charging him in federal court with unlawful distribution of a controlled substance.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a $1 million fine or both.

According to the criminal complaint against Bennett, which was unsealed in the morning, accuses the doctor of having his patients dictate which drugs they wanted, the quantity and the potency.

"In exchange for providing these prescriptions would accept things like large quantities of paper towel, toilet paper and most recently a gas grill," said U.S. Attorney for the Western District of New York William Hochul.

Bennett was released on non-financial bond and surrendered his passport. He is scheduled to return to court on Thursday.
