Buffalo, NY, (WKBW)
Channel 7 and the Buffalo Chapter of the American Red Cross thank everyone in Western New York who contributed to the "Join Us To Help Japan" newscast telethon effort Thursday.
$20,605 was raised in the 90 minute event, broadcast LIVE on Channel 7's "Eyewitness News." Monies will be used to help relief efforts after the Disaster In The Pacific.
In addition, the Wegmans Family Foundation presented a check for $100,000 to the American Red Cross. Wegman's supermarket customers and the Wegman's family secured that generous donation.
Like so many, the hearts of the American Red Cross go out to the people of Japan and the other survivors of the earthquake and tsunami on March 11th.
With the death toll rising daily, hundreds of thousands left homeless, and the ongoing nuclear threat, the Buffalo Chapter of the American Red Cross joined WKBW in the fund raising effort.
On Tuesday, the American Red Cross announced an initial contribution of $10 million to the Japanese Red Cross Society to assist in its ongoing efforts to provide medical care and relief assistance, and it’s expected more funding will be needed.
The Greater Buffalo Chapter teamed with WKBW-TV, Channel 7 for a live event Thursday evening, “Join Us To Help Japan.” Eyewitness News anchor Joanna Pasceri broadcast live from the Greater Buffalo Chapter on Delaware Avenue from 5-6:30pm, where volunteers answered the phones to take donations for the Japanese earthquake and tsunami relief efforts.
Even though the “Join Us To Help Japan” broadcast is over, donations to the relief efforts will continue to be accepted in the following ways:
1.Calling (716) 886-7500, where volunteers will accept a secure credit card donation
2. On-line by visiting www.redcross.org
3.Mailing checks to:

In addition, a $10 donation can be made by texting REDCROSS to 90999 (the charges will be added to the cell phone bill), or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS.
On those rare occasions where donations exceed American Red Cross expenses for a specific crisis, contributions are used to prepare for and service victims of other crises.
