Buffalo, NY (WKBW) - A bottle bomb exploded in a man's hands near Canisius College in Buffalo.

The college sent out an alert to students Wednesday morning.

Even though nobody was seriously injured by that explosive, Canisius College wants its students to be on the lookout.

The bottle bound was found off-campus on Meech Street, about a block away.

Officials say these explosives are often made up of legal chemicals mixed with liquids, that explode when shaken or the top is taken off.

Teenagers and high school students are often the culprits behind bottle bombs.

Even though the Canisius College does not want students to be alarmed, with Springfest coming up, public safety officials want everyone to take this seriously.

These bottles can often look like simple water or soda bottles.

The Department of Public Safety Director Gary Everett tells students if they see a water or soda bottle on the ground, call a public safety official and think twice before picking it up.

The Buffalo Police Department is investigating the incident. The department alerted Canisius College because of how close the bottle bomb was found to the college campus.
