Coffee Sends Kids To Camp

TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WKBW) - It was the usual hustle and bustle of the morning rush at Tim Hortons on Sheridan Drive in Tonawanda. However coffee lovers were doing a bit more than getting their cup of java.

"Camp Day started in 1986 and now we are building our second camp. We are very proud of this, and wanted to raise money and finance new camp so they came up with Camp Day and it became a chain-wide event," Tim Hortons CEO Paul House said.

House said "Camp Day" raises money for kids who may not otherwise have the means to go to camp. House brought in the big guns. Buffalo Bills Fred Jackson and Brian Moorman were there to help serve coffee and a bit more, including putting smiles on the faces of little fans.

"Growing up I've always wanted to go to camp, so to be able to see the process they go through to help kids take part in camp is a huge thing. I'm enjoying it, loving it and it's a great thing to be a part of," Jackson said.

Moorman agrees.

"They do such a great job getting these kids out to camp, the underprivileged kids, giving them something they would normally not get to experience. Their organization here is phenomenal and I wanted to be a part of it," Jackson said.

Mr. House said their goal is to raise $10 million to help kids go to camp.

"This summer it will be about 300 kids for this area, and we like the kids to go to a different area then where they live," House said.

Although Jackson said he is helping to bring in the big bucks, he's not so confident in his abilities behind the counter.

"What I'm doing here is probably getting in the way. They are doing a fantastic job making sure people get in," Jackson said.

The camps will take place across the U.S. and Canada. House said the generosity of their customers is overwhelming.
