A Penfield school once again holds first place in Business First's academic rankings of the Rochester Area's public elementary schools.
But it's a different Penfield school.
Cobbles Elementary School has moved up to first place in this year's standings, supplanting the 2011-2012 leader, Scribner Road Elementary School.
Cobbles has been propelled to the top by its well-rounded record of academic excellence. It ranks among the region's three best elementary schools in the core subjects of English and math, according to a separate four-year analysis by Business First. No other Rochester Area school is among the top three in both subjects.
Mendon Center Elementary School, which is in the Pittsford district, is No. 2 in this year's rankings, followed by Scribner Road in third place. Rounding out the top five are Iroquois School of West Irondequoit and Jefferson Road Elementary School of Pittsford.
Business First rated 160 public elementary schools across the Rochester Area, using four years of standardized test data for third and fourth graders. All raw statistics came from the New York State Education Department.
Nineteen schools have earned subject awards, which are presented to the Rochester Area elementary schools that rank among the top 10 percent of all schools in English or mathematics, based on an analysis of standardized test data.
Thirteen schools (including all of the top five in the overall rankings) have swept awards in both subjects.
The Rochester Area is defined as a region that includes Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne and Yates counties. It contains 67 school districts.
Business First has rated schools in Western New York (the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area) since 1992. It added separate Rochester Area rankings in 2010.
Mendon Center was the region's top-rated elementary school the first year, before Scribner Road took over the top spot in 2011 and 2012.
