From 2010 to 2012, New York state had 1,568 metal theft claims, eighth-most among 50 U.S. states and District of Columbia.

Metal theft claims have risen 36 percent in the three years since January, 2010, according to insurance research organization National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), which said it's seeing more evidence of pervasive metal theft - overwhelmingly copper - across the nation. The organization reviewed metal theft claims from the ISO ClaimsSearch database covering Jan. 1, 2010 through Dec. 31, 2012.

During this period, 33,775 insurance claims for theft of copper, bronze, brass or aluminum were handled. Of those, 32,568 (or 96 percent) were for copper alone. Aluminum was the second highest target with 955 claims.

The seven states with more metal theft claims than New York were:

Ohio 3,228
Texas 2,624
Georgia 1,953
California 1,888
North Carolina 1,682
Pennsylvania 1,675
Illinois 1,607
