Business First: Fishing as a tourism draw in Niagara

May 3, 2013 Updated May 3, 2013 at 8:14 AM EDT

With prime fishing season underway, the Niagara Tourism and Convention Corp. is hosting several influential out-of-town sport fishing reporters in an effort to boost the hospitality industry.

The Lower Niagara Rive trout fishery, Lake Ontario spring salmon and trout fishing hot spots in Wilson, Olcott and other Niagara County locations will be showcased. Bass fishing in Lake Erie will also be on display for the writers.

Among those coming in, beginning May 5, include Mark Davis, host of the Outdoor Channel's "Penn's Big Water Adventures'," Joe Cermele, "Field & Stream" fishing editor, and James Hall "Bassmaster Magazine" editor.

Why now?

"May is one of the best times of the year for sportfishing in Niagara," said Bill Hilts Jr., NTCC outdoor sports specialist.

The intent, Hilts said, is to put Niagara County on the radar screen of the sport fishing industry.
